The famous World Wide Web..

It is a great way for all ages to do a variety of things, such as researching; how ensure to reference and site of course, play games, connect with family and friends, watch movies, chat with others, look up recipes, and listen to music.

The internet provides us, especially children, with endless information and opportunities, where the world is at our finger tips, which can provide us with great opportunities or create really bad ones.

Research shows that back in 2002, the internet usage by children aged 2 to 17 tripled since 1997, and was estimated to continue to increase as the years went on. 

Being involved in your child’s internet knowing can be very difficult as you fight with yourself about providing your child with the privacy and independence you want them to develop, however/or, wanting to be more involved to protect them and be in the loop of what they are doing while online.

It is a constant battle, yet, the end result of protecting your child is the best decision you can ever make.

Online Safety Considerations

  1. Place the computer in a visible place in the home –> This allows you to be able to unnoticeably view what your child is doing, without creating any arguments. Along with promotes creating a positive relationship, and encourages both you and the child to be involved online.
  2. Create clear house old rules for all when using the internet –> Have these rules written out and kept close to the computer for a constant reminder. ( I know when I have something staring me in the face, it make me more cautious and less likely to go against it)
  3. Know your children’s passwords –> This will allow you to check into their account once they have finished, if you have any suspicions or concerns.  With all knowing the passwords, it leaves less to hide. ( My mother did this for my sisters and I, which we all agreed to)
  4. Speak to your child about potential issues they can come across with while online, and encourage them to speak to you when they are unsure of something, or feel uneasy.
  5. Navigate the internet with your children –> This will show you how they navigate and what sort of links, or visuals they may come across.
  6. Participate in online role play dialogue –> This allows the child to build up the confidence of approaching an uncomfortable situation. It gives them the opportunity to understand others motives, and promotes problem solving skills that will support defending themselves.

It is important to remember that the internet will be around forever, therefore, teaching and supporting your children from the beginning with these considerations and the many more out there, it will create experiences opportunities that are endless.
